How to Organize Your Kitchen Before the Holidays

The holidays are coming fast, and the kitchen is where most of the action happens. It's where you bake cookies, cook the big dinner, store leftovers, and somehow end up hosting everyone who walks through the door.

That's why we love getting the kitchen organized in October. The holiday rush hasn't started yet, so you have time to make a few small changes now that will pay off in November and December. You don't need a full kitchen makeover. Just focus on the areas that work hardest this time of year.

1. Start With the Pantry

Your pantry is about to get a lot fuller, so make some room now.

  • Clear it out. Toss anything expired, donate unopened foods you know you won't use, and take stock of what you already have.

  • Group like with like. Sort what's left into categories: baking supplies, snacks, canned goods, breakfast foods and dinner staples.

  • Use bins and baskets. Clear containers or labeled bins keep categories together and make it easy to grab what you need.

  • Make a holiday baking zone. Keep flour, sugar, sprinkles, chocolate chips and cookie cutters together so baking day is quick and easy.

Once your pantry is sorted, you'll know exactly what you have before holiday grocery shopping begins. No more buying a third jar of cinnamon!

2. Refresh the Fridge and Freezer

Between big dinners and leftovers, your fridge will be working overtime.

  • Empty and wipe it down. Throw out old condiments, forgotten leftovers and anything past its prime.

  • Create zones. Give drinks, dairy, produce and leftovers each their own space so everyone knows where things go.

  • Clear a shelf for holiday prep. An open shelf makes room for a turkey, make-ahead dishes or desserts.

  • Use up the freezer. Plan a few meals around what's already in there to free up space for holiday cooking.

3. Clear Your Counters

Counter space is gold during the holidays, when you need room to roll dough, set out appetizers and line up dishes.

  • Keep only daily essentials out. The coffee maker might stay, but small appliances you rarely use can go in a cabinet.

  • Corral the clutter. A tray or basket keeps mail, keys and school papers from spreading across the counter.

  • Store tools where you use them. Keep mixing bowls, measuring cups and baking sheets close to your prep area.

4. Gather Your Hosting Essentials

Nothing adds stress like hunting for the gravy boat an hour before guests arrive.

  • Pull out serving pieces now. Check your platters, serving bowls, roasting pan and extra dishes. Make sure everything is clean and nothing is missing.

  • Store them together. Keep holiday serving pieces in one cabinet or bin so they're easy to find, then easy to put away after.

  • Stock up on storage containers. Match lids to containers and toss any without a partner. Keep a few extras on hand for sending leftovers home with guests.

Function Over Perfection

Your kitchen doesn't need to look like it belongs in a magazine. The goal is a space that makes cooking, hosting and everyday life easier during one of the busiest times of the year. Tackle one area at a time, and by the time the holidays arrive, you'll be ready to enjoy them.
