FIVE Closet Decluttering Tests for the Clothes You Can’t Decide Whether to Keep

Cleaning out your closet sounds simple enough—until you’re standing there holding a shirt you haven’t worn in two years and somehow still can’t convince yourself to let it go. Maybe you spent good money on it. Maybe it might fit differently someday. Or maybe there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it...you just never choose to wear it.

If you find yourself stuck in the “keep or donate?” debate, sometimes asking a different question is all it takes. Instead of relying on the usual “Have I worn this in the last year?” rule, try one of these five closet tests. Your gut reaction might make the decision for you.

The “Please Don’t Pick That One” Test

Imagine you’re away from home and ask someone to grab a shirt, pair of pants, or outfit from your closet. Which pieces are you silently begging them not to choose? If you don’t want to wear it when someone else picks it, why are you keeping it as an option?

The Laundry Test

Think about what happens when everything you own is clean. Which clothes get worn first—and which ones sit there until you’re desperate? The things perpetually left hanging while their neighbors cycle through the laundry are telling you something.

The “Would I Buy It Today?” Test

Forget what you paid for it. If you were standing in a store today and saw that exact piece in your current size, would you spend money on it again? If the answer is no, the fact that you already spent money on it isn’t a reason to give it closet space forever.

The Outfit Test

Can you actually make an outfit with it using things you currently own? Sometimes we keep a shirt because we like the shirt—but it requires the right pants, shoes, bra, jacket, occasion, weather, and alignment of the planets before we’ll actually wear it. If it’s consistently too difficult to style, that matters.

The “Would I Be Happy Wearing This Tomorrow?” Test

Imagine someone tells you that you have to wear this item tomorrow. What’s your immediate reaction? “Sure!” is very different from “Ugh, fine.” That gut reaction can be more useful than trying to remember the last time you wore it.

Decluttering your closet doesn’t have to mean following a bunch of strict rules or getting rid of half your wardrobe in one afternoon. The goal is simply to make a little more room for the things you actually enjoy wearing. So when you find yourself holding onto something “just because,” try one of these tests and pay attention to your first reaction. You might be surprised how quickly you already know the answer.
